SkyWarn Spotter Program

What is SkyWarn?

SkyWarn is a National Weather Service (NWS) program of trained volunteer severe weather spotters. SkyWarn volunteers support their local community by providing the NWS with timely and accurate significant weather reports. The key focus of the SkyWarn program is to save lives and property through the use of the observations and reports of trained volunteers.

Why Do We Have the SkyWarn Spotter Program?

Although weather satellites and doppler radar use the latest technology to provide a wealth of information to forecasters, no tool has yet been developed that can replace a human observation of the weather in a local area at a specific time. You can help! By altering us to significant weather events, you become the "eyes and ears" for the NWS in your area and help us determine when and where we need to issue warnings. It helps others and could save lives.

How Do I Become a SkyWarn Weather Spotter?

The SkyWarn program is completely voluntary and we welcome anyone with an interest in weather.
