Experience what a career in the National Weather Service entails! Apply to our summer volunteer program and gain real-world operational meteorology experience. Opportunities are available at the NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Offices (WFO) in Flagstaff, AZ, Las Vegas, NV, and Phoenix, AZ

Outcomes | You will: develop an understanding of the culture, responsibilities, and services of the WFO; complete operational training; assist the WFO in providing real-time operational services to its customers; complete a (small) research project that benefits the student and WFO; participate in office outreach activities; receive career counseling; possibly visit other nearby WFOs. Current students may elect to receive credit for the volunteer program and should consult with appropriate university officials.

Schedule | The start and end dates and daily hours are flexible and vary from office to office. See below.

WFO Flagstaff, AZ

Dates: June 15 to Aug 30
Frequency: ~2 days/week
Hours: Typically 12PM - 6PM

WFO Las Vegas, NV

Dates: Jun 15 to Aug 30
Frequency: ~2-3 days/week
Hours: 2PM - 6PM

WFO Phoenix, AZ

Dates: Jun 15 to Aug 30
Frequency: ~2 days/week
Hours: Typically 4-8 PM

Eligibility | To qualify, applicants must be an undergraduate student entering their junior or senior year or a graduate student in good academic standing or a recent graduate (within the past 12 months). Applicants should be pursuing or have a degree in meteorology that meets the U.S. Government Series 1340 requirements (link) or a degree in hydrology that meets the 1315 requirements (link). All volunteers are subject to a mandatory security background check. This position is unpaid.

Application | The selection process will be competitive. Applicants must submit 1) a resume, 2) a single-page cover letter expressing interests, motivation, skills, preferred start/end dates, and which of the four offices applying to, 3) unofficial transcripts, and 4) one letter of reference (academic). Approximately 1-4 volunteers will be selected at each office.
